Depending on what other programs you have running in your X session this is

It is not. As it states it uses the ffmpeg_video_dec, which is ffmpeg and not
vdpau. Likely this happens because you run out of video memory. Try with a
lower resolution clip or with just a plain X server running, no other
applications.
